Hiking & Waterfalls

The DeSoto Falls Recreation Area is located off Highway 129 just inside the National Forest boundary. There are two waterfalls which can be easily viewed along the DeSoto Falls trails. Trout fishing is popular along Frogtown Creek. A mature forest provides the perfect setting for a family recreation getaway. Located on the boundary of DeKalb and Cherokee Counties, in the rugged yet verdant landscape of northeast Alabama, Little River Canyon National Preserve (the preserve) was established in 1992 by Public Law 102-427 to protect the landscapes of the Little River Canyon. The authorized boundary of the preserve currently contains 15,288 acres, 11,042 acres of which are federally owned and managed. The Cherokee Rock Village Park encompasses over 200-acres of sandstone boulders reaching as high as 200-feet. They feature crags, cliffs, and tall rock formations for climbing. For those who like to stay closer to the ground, you can enjoy 14-miles of hiking, equestrian and mountain trails. The Park is also a wonderful location for bird watching and geocaching. You will find spectacular views of Weiss Lake and the surrounding valley. Amenities include primitive camping, RV dry camping, pavilion, picnic areas, playground, and showers. The picturesque waterfalls flow over natural rocks into Weiss Lake at the footers of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia Railway Trestle at Yellow Creek Falls. Call in advance for kayak rentals. Noccalula Falls Park encompassing 500 acres of land situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Noccalula Falls Park and is a must-see destination in Northeast Alabama. Created by the City of Gadsden and managed by the Noccalula Falls Park staff, the original park opened in 1953 and has since become the destination of Hikers, Campers and families from all over the world. Central to the park is Black Creek. Situated directly in the middle is Noccalula Falls, a beautiful 90-foot waterfall that drops into a gorge that runs for miles downstream. On the park side of Black Creek, visitors can visit a beautifully landscaped oasis including a Botanical Garden, Animal Habit, and historical buildings built in the late 1700's and 1800's, as well as ride one of two miniature trains that travel through the park on a mile-long journey through history. Once you've seen the park and all it has to offer, head down the Gorge Trail along a path that takes you down to the cavern behind the falls. As you head out of the park for the day, make sure you stop into our Gift Shop and grab a souvenir to remember your trip by.
